Why Unisex Clothes Never Took Off
It was probably somewhere around the seventies when the term ‘unisex clothing’ was invented by clothing manufacturers. After a short period of mild interest, they disappeared from the shelves. Men just weren’t interested and women became interested in wearing men’s clothes.
Men’s styles and fashions did change. Men have a much wider range of options available to them than they used to. A man can have shoulder length hair and still be a macho man and he doesn’t have to stick with a conservative suit anymore. Men even choose to pierce one or both or their ears. As long as they’re wearing stud earrings, they can get away with it, but a feminine looking pair of rhodium earrings won’t do anything for their masculine image.
Women, on the other hand, can wear whatever they feel like wearing. A woman might even choose to wear a bulky men’s sports watch and it might look sexy on her. There’s nothing sexy about a dainty watch on a man, though.
Women sometimes buy matching sets of jewelry. A jewelry set looks nice on a woman. Her matching necklace and earrings complement each other and accentuate her appearance. Jewelry sets simply don’t work on men, though, for some reason. A man can get away with wearing an earring or two and a necklace, but not if they match. They only work on a man if they look completely different, as if his girlfriend bought the earring for him and he bought the necklace while he was backpacking overseas.
These principles apply to every department of men’s and women’s fashion. Men’s things can have a way of enhancing a woman’s sexuality. Women’s things feminize men. If that’s what he wants, that’s his choice, but if he’s looking for men’s clothes for straight men, he’s not going to find them in the women’s section of a clothing store.
Sweatshirts are basically just sweatshirts, whether they’re made for men or for women. Nonetheless, there is something incredibly sexy about a woman in a man’s sweatshirt, but girls sweatshirts on men are unheard of. You can’t even picture it in your mind.
Blue jeans were originally designed for working men, but when women started wearing them, they took off like a rocket because they looked fantastic in them. Sure, they look even better if they are tailored for girls, but they still look great. Nobody could tailor a skirt or a dress for a man that would sell, though. It just wouldn’t work.
Nobody knows for sure why these things are so. They just are. Women look good and lose nothing of their femininity in men’s clothes and accessories. The converse isn’t true, though. Unisex clothes didn’t work because they weren’t masculine enough for men or women. About the only item of unisex clothing that stuck was the yoga drawstring pant. The best advice for men is to do your shopping in a men’s store.
