SELF STORAGE – TIPS FOR A SMOOTH MOVE
There are some people who spend their lives collecting stuff, and there are others who live without.Even if you’re not a collector, you’re more than likely to make use of a storage facility somewhere along the way.
From moving home, moving offices or changing to a minimalist look at home but can’t part with anything to putting away goods that aren’t immediately needed, self-storage is often the best way to do it.
It’s a good idea to invest some time planning your move and storing your things in an organised, disciplined way – you’ll be thankful you did. Here are a few tips to ease the process, and to help you locate something if you need it in a hurry !
A FEW GENERAL TIPS
* Look for butcher’s paper or unprinted newspaper for wrapping items, as newsprint can soil your things
* Photograph your most valuable items in case of an insurance claim
* Arrange copies of passports, visas, birth certificates etc and keep in a separate place
• If packing house contents, try and pack room by room and store the room contents close together
• Have a designated ‘necessities’ box which can be unpacked first and which contains vital items such as adapter plugs, screwdriver, remote controls for TVs etc, a set of linen for each bed that will need to be made up on the first night, torch, candle
BOXES
* Boxes should be the same size and should not be too big, as they get too heavy and impossible to move
* Ensure all boxes are clearly labelled.Another way of doing it is to number the boxes and keep a detailed list of what’s in them.Another suggestion from EzyStorage, a Perth self storage unit company, is to pack each room into boxes with a specific coloured label eg. red labels for main bedroom, blue for kitchen etc.
* Pop a few napthalene balls or similar insect repellant into each box
* Seal boxes securely with packing tape
* Stack your boxes with the labels facing out (sounds simple, but worth remembering) !
* Boxes and furniture should be placed on pallets rather than directly onto the concrete floor to prevent moisture absorption
OTHER ITEMS
* To avoid damaging the spines of books, pack them flat into boxes
* Avoid storing mirrors, paintings etc flat – they should be on their side to protect the glass
* Take batteries out of any battery operated item
• Silver should be wrapped in non-acidic tissue paper to prevent tarnishing
• Wipe all metal, chrome or cast iron surfaces eg bicycles, lawnmowers with a little machine oil to delay rusting
• Drain any petrol or flammable liquids from machinery, including gas bottles
* Clean fridges and freezers before storing, and ensure they are totally dry.In storage, secure the doors slightly ajar
• Clothing and curtains should be hung on hangers if possible
FURNITURE
* Mattresses and couches should stand on their sides or ends, not flat
* Dissemble tables where possible, otherwise stack them upside down.
* Tape keys to cupboard doors, draws etc. securely to the inside of the item
PACKING THE STORAGE AREA
* Keep a central aisle open to enable easy access
• Store items you are likely to need at the front of the unit
* Store valuable items right at the back of the storage area
* Consider low-cost shelving to create more storage space which is easily accessible
* Put a dust cover made from cotton or a light plastic sheet over everything
